Make time to work ON your Business!
I
have client, a retailer who worked five days a week in his
business. When we met four years ago, I asked, “When do you work on your business?”
My new client gave me a puzzled look and asked, “Don’t you think
I do work and should work every day at (in) my business?” I explained that working in
or at the business wasn’t the same as
working on it — doing things that
didn’t involve retail sales, but that set the scene for greater success.
I told my client to set aside one day a week for a month and not go into the store, but work on his business from his home office. He did, and after the
third week the company’s books were up to date, new marketing plans and
activities were researched and planned, and progress was made on developing an
Employee Handbook.
My client had a classic
“Aha! moment”: “Now I see why working on
my business is so important.” Since that schedule
change, this client’s annual revenues have almost tripled, and he has time to
plan and move the company forward.
I recommend that every business owner
spend at least 5 hours a week (a full day is better) working on
his/her business.
